Thailand Approves $602M Deal for Swedish Gripen Jets to Modernise Air Force

Thailand’s Cabinet has approved a 19.5 billion baht (US$602 million) deal to acquire four Saab JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets from Sweden, aiming to modernise the Royal Thai Air Force and phase out aging F-16s. Signed under a government-to-government agreement, the contract is set for August 25, with delivery expected by 2029. The full plan spans three phases and will total 12 jets by 2036. The Gripen E/F models offer cutting-edge radar, electronic warfare tech, and long-range missile capabilities. Despite earlier speculation that Sweden might halt the sale over Thai-Cambodian border tensions—where older Gripens were recently used in combat—both sides have confirmed the deal is moving forward. Opposition parties support the procurement but seek clearer strategic justification.
