Thailand’s cinema sector is bracing for tough times as audiences, squeezed by economic uncertainty, become more discerning about where they spend their money. GDH 559’s content director, Thodsapon Thiptinnakorn, warns that moviegoers may now only visit cinemas once a month instead of multiple times—unless films offer compelling concepts. He highlights fierce competition from Hollywood blockbusters, shortened theatrical runs for underperforming local films, and the disproportionate impact of these trends on indie filmmakers. To counteract this, Thodsapon urges streamlined screening schedules, deeper collaboration between film schools and studios, and investment in higher production standards for broader regional and global appeal.
