Is there Customs duty on computers?

Featured Replies

I'm planning on buying a refurbished 2015 MacBook Pro from the US.

I was pretty ure there was no duty on computers or computers parts, just VAT, unless the regs have changed recently.

TIA!

No, only VAT.

Well, also a small processing fee.

If you declare the laptop as having a value of 500 USD when it's shipped, you'll pay around 1800 Baht in VAT and processing.

Awesome, Cameroni, thanks! I've been a Mac guy since 1984 but the last good ones with 2015. It may sound a fool's errand to buy a ten-year old computer but I'd rather take my chances than to pay $4k to a trillion-dollar company kissing Trump's ass!

Not sure about duty, but you could get problems (charged money) if you bring a "New" PC into the country. I don't know for certain if the rules still apply, but Chiang Mai airport customs stopped me when I brought a new PC from China with me back to Thailand as a gift to the kids in my wife's extended family (It was part of some test equipment controller - but repurposed with Windows)

They were going to charge me duty or tax at the airport, but when I explained it was for the local Thai kids to help with school - The customs officer told me "Just tell me that it is NOT new" - which I did, and they let me bring it in free of charge.

So a few years back, there was certainly a charge on new imported computers.

Wow! I already bought the Mac (2015!) but Zeer sounds like the old Pantip. Do you think it so?

It is a smaller version and due to the economy getting smaller, but yes, it has a lot of stalls selling parts and even software
