In an unusual turn of events yesterday in Samut Prakan, a long-tailed macaque caused quite a stir after falling from an electricity pole onto a parked sedan. The incident took place outside a condominium in the Bang Pu neighbourhood, resulting in a shattered rear window and a flurry of activity to catch the rogue primate.

Security guards at the complex initially alerted the Bang Pu Sub-district Municipality Office when the monkey, having strayed from a nearby forest, began navigating the overhead electrical wires. Despite efforts to encourage its return to the forest, the macaque continued its perilous journey across the wires until it reached a transformer. There, it received a shocking jolt.

The resulting fall onto a car below shattered the vehicle’s window but did not deter the resilient monkey. Instead, the animal continued its adventure by scaling the six-storey condominium, ultimately finding refuge on the rooftop.

Municipality officials, equipped with a veterinarian and an anaesthetic gun, were dispatched to the scene to manage the situation. Initial attempts to net the nimble macaque proved fruitless as it evaded capture. The decision was made to use the anaesthetic gun, yet landing a successful shot on the restless creature was no easy feat.

After more than an hour of pursuit, the veterinarian managed to tranquillise the monkey with a shot to the leg. Slightly stunned, the primate made its way down the building and concealed itself in nearby bushes, where it was finally apprehended by the officials and security guards.

The captured monkey was then transported to the Si Racha Protected Areas Regional Office 2 in Chon Buri for further care. Fortunately, no human injuries were reported during the incident.

Questions remain regarding who will cover the costs for the damage to the car, estimated in Thai Baht, but it is anticipated that the vehicle owner’s insurance may handle repairs.

This peculiar incident highlights the ongoing challenges of urban-wildlife interactions, a growing concern as natural habitats continue to encroach upon city boundaries. It serves as a reminder of the adaptability and resilience of wildlife, even amidst bustling urban environments.
