My main point was that this man went overboard because someone ate a piece of fruit. That he argued and stole was of course wrong, but no one deserves to be stabbed for any reason besides them attacking another, meaning self defense against those with a weapon. That people stab others here daily is a major problem, and it shows the lack of concern for life to attempt murder for such frivolous things.

 

Yes, I've seen many people stealing apples and other fruits on roadside stands and in supermarkets, but never have I seen anyone stabbed because of it. I received thumbs down in an earlier reply, which means some are okay with someone stabbing someone because they stole a piece of fruit. Kinda weird thinking.

When we arrived in Thailand on a holiday a couple of years ago I asked a Pattaya taxi driver if he likes Russians. His reply was he didn’t “they steal fruit”.

I would consider a mistake to be inadvertent. As he doubled down and refused repeatedly this was deliberate imo. We agree on thr more important points though - both stealing and violence are wrong.

Taking something that belongs to another without paying is stealing.

Minor mistake?, hardly, this is something taught in early childhood as far as I know in every culture.

 

Obviously the vendor over-reacted but stealing from him and then refusing to pay was a major provocation IMHO.

 

In some places he could have had his hand chopped off.

I would not assume this is what actually happened.  In Thailand, as you know, the reporters can't be trusted to seek the truth and the police can't be trusted to speak the truth. 

 

I assume that may be what the vendor told the police, or it may not be.
