Rachel Robert’s "Sporting Life": Barking like a Welsh Corgi

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

It has been many years since I first watched the famous film, This Sporting Life. And, I must say that I very-much underestimated the acting talents of Rachel Roberts, when I was young.

This is a tribute to Rachel Roberts.

Also, this is a question about great actors, such as she, namely, why did she not reach her deserved stardom in the history of filmdom?

It’s obvious to me that Roberts was an amazing actor, and so why did she not appear in many more films?  Is this tragedy just due to the poor standards of movie goers, being too dumb and stupid to appreciate her great acting talent?

Also, why did she find it so necessary to bark like a dog, during private parties, and chew on Robert Mitchum’s trouser legs?

Yes, This Sporting Life is a film that we all recall, despite the fact that the film was released over 60 years ago.

Now that I am older, I have become smitten with her on-screen ways. Not only smitten, I would say I have fallen in love with her.  I wish she were alive today, for this reason and for her own sake, as well.

So, the main questions in this Topic are:

a. Do you love her?

b. Do you appreciate her talent?

c. What would you like to say to her if she were alive today?

d. How many times have you watched “This Sporting Life”?

e. Was Harris mean to her? And, how much did he love her?

f. Will we ever see films like this, ever again, from the UK, in the future?

g. Many other questions rattling around in my head, having just re-watched this film.

Best regards,

Gamma

Note: When I say I am now fully smitten by her, I mean that I am completely slain by her, meaning….TRUE LOVE….

And you?

Would you let her bite your trouser leg, as did Robert Mitchum, while lovingly patting her on the head, just for fun, if it would mean that you could talk to her?

Such a great actor was she….and so very underappreciated.  If only she had had a better agent, then we would have had many great films from her, and I have ZERO doubt.

Note2:  By This Sporting Life, we of course mean....

Note3:  And, when we say that Roberts enjoyed chewing on Mitchum's trousers, then this is also well documented.....

Note4.  Roberts kept a diary. This diary has been published, and is available from Amazon, for a price.  So, I have yet to download it, and I am sure that I will, someday soon.

Great Actress....IMHO.....

Infinite love is the only truth...everything else is illusion.

If she had had more good support, when she needed it, then maybe we would now have a few more great films from her to cherish......these days.

And, regarding the word CHERISH, I can only say I mean cherish....

Sad to watch.

And, WHAT does THIS comment of yours have to do with Rachel Roberts?

Or, is this question unimportant to you?

I thought you attended one of the best schools in Canada....such as....

a. University of Toronto

b. McGill

Did you not?

If you did, then what happened to you, since then?

Is this how they talk at McGill?

As far as I know...

Not!

You're the one obsessed with McGill not me. I would never want to attend a place such like that. Gross.

Now continue into the darkness you go.

You remind me a bit, when you say some things, of Dylan Thomas.

Dylan Thomas, unlike you, wrote drivel.

Why was Dylan Thomas so revered, during a very, very short time, back in the day?

Do you know?

All I know is i don't belong. I've made peace with that a long time ago. Most of my frail deeds go unnoticed.

So then, why do you insist upon hiding your light under a bushel?

But, I would advise using the NRSV, instead, which is required reading at Yale University....

Wow...

The cats, outside my house, are yowling a mean-streak this night.

Time to read the NRSV translation of the Bible, I guess.

What a fantastic film, from Lean.

Also, Lawrence of Arabia, by David Lean.

So, make up your mind.

If you want cold, then go to Russia.

If you want hot, then go to the Arabian desert.

But, if you choose the desert, then first learn to ride a camel....

There is a misspelling in the title, involving the name of the actor.

Should be Rachel Roberts' sporting life and not Rachel Robert's sporting life.

Everybody knows this.

Still, one should acknowledge a sloppy error of mine, one among many.

Sorry to Roberts.

She is my new love.

In another thread, you said you could not care less about grammar, spelling, and syntax.

Either make up your mind, or have yourself cognitively tested.

That last one was not a question, right?

Sorry, I didn't spell it out for you.

It's how long people who went to prestigious colleges wait before mentioning it.

Some people are slower than others of course, as you demonstrate.
