A 19-year-old man miraculously escaped injury after being shot at close range during an early-morning incident on Jomtien Beach.

Police said the incident occurred at around 04:05 on 13 August, near The Now Hotel, Jomtien Beach. Officers from Pattaya City Police Station, Dong Tan sub-branch, led by Pol Lt Col Chainnaret Phengkhaen, rushed to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire.

On arrival, they found the victim, named as Mr Panyawit, had a bullet hole through his shirt but no injuries. At the scene, officers recovered two spent .38 calibre casings and an unfired round. The suspects had fled on motorcycles along Jomtien Beach Road.

Mr Panyawit told police that the attackers were old rivals of his friend, 18-year-old Mr Thanochot. While they were sitting on the beach, the group of assailants drove past. Sensing trouble, they tried to run, but the suspects opened fire twice. One bullet pierced his shirt but missed his body. He said he believed his survival was a miracle, thanks to an amulet from a well-known temple that he had been wearing.

The dispute reportedly stemmed from a love triangle incident two months earlier, which Mr Panyawit believed had been resolved. He said he had not expected further retaliation. On the night of the attack, which was Mother’s Day, he had earlier brought his mother to the beach and posted a location check-in on social media, possibly enabling the attackers to track them down.

Pol Col Anek Sarathong-uth, superintendent of Pattaya City Police, ordered roadblocks and checks based on footage from bystanders, which clearly showed the attackers arriving on four motorcycles. Although the suspects remain at large, police say they have identified them and are now working to bring them into custody.
