Best To Bring a UK Driver's License to Open Bank Account ?

Featured Replies

If I had to re-open a bank account fresh in LoS are they no longer accepting passports ?.. Just a plan B if there is any issue with my Bangkok Bank account being shut when I get back to LoS.

I read one member commented he needed photo ID with address on it (seemingly not a passport) to open a bank account ?

In that case should I convert my UK paper driver's license to a new hard plastic photo ID card with my UK address to

have the correct home country ID with me ? Seems strange but that's what I thought the post was getting at...that you needed something

"offiicial photo ID with your home country address enbedded in it".

I opened individual & joint savings accts with Bangkok Bank & SCB using passport, marriage certificate and lease agreement. I have LTR-WP visa.

Presumably he'd have been talking about an address in Thailand - a Thai driving licence would provide that. They won't accept a UK licence, though the UK licence can be used to get a Thai licence and to this end it's worth having the laminate card.

To open a new account nowadays you'd need a long stay visa, a Thai phone number and proof of address / certificate of residence here. Hopefully they'll give you no problem with your existing account.

Surprising you still have a paper home driving licence. i heard one bank ask for home driving licence, not sure of the logic of that, they will never not need a passport, if they make it too difficult move to the next bank

A passport is still required, but it may not be sufficient anymore. It's definitely a good idea to take along additional ID documents.

What is needed entirely depends upon the visa or extension you possess. If you have a work permit you will not need any proof of your address.

It is increasingly evident that they are limiting the people who can open accounts to those on what used to be called the resident visas/ extensions, i.e. the "non-Imm ... ".

It's all about longterm visas at the moment.

I tried for the past two weeks (12 different branches) of K Bank and SCB.

I have a Certificate of Residence, Thai Driving Licences, TM30 and showed by BBL account (8 years) and said I wanted to leave BBL to join your bank.

Each one was progressing until they saw my 60 day visa stamp.

These days you could show up with a dump truck full of gold looking for a place to deposit it, and they still won’t

 open an account.

I still see people repeating myths about wearing nice shoes, “bringing a Thai,” or showing lots of cash. But none of that matters, if it ever did.

It works though, if using an agent, who guarantees for the bank that you're on route to a longer visa, like a retirement visa.

But I understand we're not discussing that here.

I tried opening  Thai bank account recently and asked numerous banks /agencies .

They all required two forms of photo I.D. : A passport and something else , a Thai driving licence would be acceptable as a form of I.D

It does not work when using an agent, anymore. There have been numerous threads and news articles about this.

It sure does. You are misinformed. My best friend opened a new bank account at Krungsri Bank on Sunday in Pattaya. From a 60 days visa exemption. Using an agent, on route to his retirement visa.

Several agents do it as well.

They required two IDs, passport and a driving license, and proof of residence. And he was accompanied by an agent employee to the bank, who explained the procedure. Done in less than an hour.

I did the same thing btw. PM me if you want the name of the agent we used.

They don't give a s*** about a UK driving license

You can't open an account on a 60 days visa exemption now. That's what we are discussing here. Not even on a DTV.

You just can't. You will need a proper visa, like a 90 days Non-O or such. Or an agent can help you get one, if you join their retirement visa process.

Keep up, mister.
