Police in Phetchabun have arrested a 29-year-old man accused of attempting to smuggle methamphetamine to Japan hidden inside souvenir dolls.

The suspect, Mr Phet Sae-Thao, was apprehended outside his home at House No. 53, Moo 7, Khek Noi Subdistrict, Khao Kho District. The arrest followed an investigation initiated on 18 August when local police received a tip-off from a courier concerned that packages destined for Japan might contain illegal drugs.

Upon inspection, officers discovered two boxes containing a total of 789 souvenir dolls. The dolls, which had heads made from ping-pong balls, concealed crystalline substances later confirmed to be methamphetamine. Authorities found 665 dolls containing drugs, while 124 were clean.

Further investigation revealed that Mr Phet, a resident of Phetchabun with a prior drug-related record, was responsible for sending the packages. Police obtained a warrant from the Min Buri Criminal Court and tracked him to his home, where he was arrested on 21 August.

During questioning, Mr Phet admitted to the charges and confessed fully to the offence.

He now faces charges of possession and distribution of a Class 1 narcotic (methamphetamine) with intent to supply, in violation of Thailand’s narcotics laws. Authorities have confirmed the case will proceed through the criminal justice system.
