The reason is probably that it's a more visual age. A guy like Christopher Cross with his superb music could never make it today because he looked like the Pilsbury doughboy. Women are just more visually appealing.

 

 

As I mentioned before, the Youtube videos, along with concerts, and before MTV, is what had people buying. If there was only radio, people like Christopher Cross would always be selling because the music was good, and not because of concerts. If you look at rock or metal concerts, the majority are attended by men, and with pop, women. Country is pretty evenly mixed. Gen Z has a tad more women attending in general.

Yes, it does vary by music genre, of course Heavy Metal is mostly for pathetic goody-two shoes loners who are male, but pop music today has to be equally male and females listening to it. Or have men just checked out of pop music because of video games?

Many people daily write top quality songs with good lyrics. Many of them might never get exposed unless someone in the industry with pull hears them. Looking at the lyrics of many very popular songs, they're very simple and a lot are much alike.

 

Songs by one band as an example, Kansas, have very thought provoking, intelligent lyrics, but Kansas isn't near as popular as the Taylor Swifts because pop music again is targeted to the teen crowd, even though Swift's songs will never approach the complexity, musicianship and profound lyricism that Kansas songs do. It's all about the targeted audience that buys the most.

 

The Beatles sold multi millions with many very simple songs because of their look, and not because they were excellent musicians. They improved their musicianship over time, but there are many bands that will always be better in all ways, even though they sell much less.

A song should be first listened to with open ears and heart, then decided if it's a good one. Many men will never like female artists because the reason you suggested. Their loss, even though they'll never admit it. Not many singers can compare to Enya, male or  female, and she also writes her music and plays the instruments. Mostly Autumn, a progressive rock band, has an excellent guitarist, Bryan Josh,  who is influenced by Pink Floyd's music, Gilmour. Their singers have always been females, with Heather Findlay and Olivia Sparnenn-Josh, as good as any female singer alive or dead, but many will never hear their music.

See above ,"co-writing" doesn't count. All her most successful songs were "co-written" by top male music producing talent. Only her least successful songs were written by her. Whenever she had a real hit it was always written by men, her musical producers.

My guess is Daman Albarn, of whom I'm a fan, probably gained a lot of favourable attention from his audience for the comments. He's has no reason to be scared of controversy! 😂
