Europe's record mosquito-borne disease activity could signal new normal

August 21, 2025

Record activity this summer involving two mosquito-borne diseases—chikungunya and West Nile virus (WNV)—suggests the European region is entering a new normal, driven by climate shifts, officials from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said today.

...

The Australia-based World Mosquito Program estimates that mosquito-borne diseases kill 1 million people each year and infect as many as 700 million. For dengue alone this year, 3.6 million cases with more than 1,900 deaths have been reported across 94 countries and territories, with a notable surge in countries in the Pacific.

...

The ECDC said the Aedes albopictus mosquitoes that can spread chikungunya now have a foothold in 16 European countries and 369 regions, up sharply from just 114 regions a decade ago. ... Rising temperatures, longer summer seasons, milder winters, and changing rainfall patterns are creating more favorable conditions for the mosquito populations to thrive, the group added.

...

European officials have recorded the most WNV cases in 3 years, and ECDC officials expect infections to keep rising until a seasonal peak this month or next. So far, eight counties have reported 335 locally acquired WNV cases, 19 of them fatal.

I don't guess it has anything to do with all those rubber dinghies full of unvetted people from the 3rd world...

Assuming that there is a link between race and an increase in mosquito-borne diseases is misguided. It's essential to reevaluate your perspective on race relations and consider the broader context of these public health issues. Understanding the complexities involved will lead to more informed and constructive discussions.

Who said anything about race?  Not me.

The rubber dinghies you mentioned do not contain only white people.  Own your racism.

I'm not the racist in this conversation.

I am the culturalist.  People raised and educated in a backward culture don't generally assimilate well into a more advanced culture.  Regardless of skin color.

(There's a Star Trek episode on that.)  Edit:  And don't forget The Beverly Hillbillies.

And they bring with them their 3rd world health problems.

Oh no you didn't.

If one takes the time to read about the potential health impacts of global warming, this is not a surprise.

For several decades, mosquito-borne diseases have been spreading to once cooler climates in many countries and regions on the planet.

Of course, to some, global warming is fake, so maybe mosquito-borne diseases are also fake, just all woke propaganda, until you contract a mosquito-borne disease which kills you.

I'm open to that possibility.  But history is chock full of epidemics brought about by immigration, long before there was any modern industry.

As the ECDC reports above, this particular epidemic issue with mosquito borne diseases IS being driven by changing climate conditions -- not immigration patterns, as much as some people would like to blame the latter for everything that's wrong in the world.

That's just one opinion.  Or rather, just one interpretation of the data.

It's a good thing you didn't guess that. Because if you did, you'd be wrong.
