Residents of South Pattaya were left shaken and then rather red-faced on the night of 24 August, after what appeared to be the body of a baby dumped by the roadside turned out to be nothing more sinister than a life-sized rubber doll.

Multiple police and rescue workers rushed to the scene outside a motorcycle showroom on South Pattaya Road after receiving an emergency call from a concerned local. The tip-off seemed grim: a black plastic bag with what looked like a tiny arm sticking out.

Crowds gathered as officers cordoned off the area, with whispers spreading quickly that a horrific discovery had been made. The drama reached its climax when rescue volunteers carefully opened the bag, only to reveal a baby-sized rubber doll staring blankly back at them.

Relieved gasps and embarrassed laughter quickly replaced the panic.

“I honestly thought it was a real baby,” admitted Farid, 33, who reported the find. “You don’t take chances with something like that. Better safe than sorry.” He also recalled seeing a middle-aged foreigner loitering in the area earlier in the day, though whether he had anything to do with the abandoned toy remains a mystery.

Police say they will review nearby CCTV footage to determine who left the doll behind. In the meantime, locals are just happy it wasn’t the tragedy they feared.

As one onlooker put it with a smile: “Only in Pattaya could a crowd gather for a rubber baby.”

We used to put dolls like that under parked cars and watch the owners panic and see their entire lives go up in smoke. Then came the rage when they talked to the doll and looked for vital signs, only to discover it was a sick joke.  Man, my 40s were fun!

I wish it had red hair. :coffee1:

I heard that there was a riot due to the 1st responders being unnecessarily woken up from their precious sleep to attend the scene.
