A monk was killed after being struck by a pickup truck during his first-day alms round on a newly changed route. Dashcam footage captured the moment. The driver claimed the bend in the road obstructed his view.

Police Lieutenant Ruangsak Saengkham of Thamenchai Police Station, Lam Plai Mat District, Buriram Province, reported that the incident occurred on Road 226, Buriram–Lam Plai Mat, in Nong Bua Khok Subdistrict. Emergency responders from the local subdistrict administrative organisation attended the scene.

The road, a dual carriageway stretch with a sharp bend, was where 71-year-old Phra Rueang Thanaparo of Wat Pathumkhongkharam was struck. He suffered multiple fractures and was pronounced dead at the scene. Nearby, a white Isuzu box truck from Nakhon Ratchasima was found with front-end damage. Preliminary checks revealed the vehicle’s tax and insurance were not up to date.

Phra Watcharin, a fellow monk walking with Phra Rueang, said they had set out for their morning alms round. “Today was the first day we took this route. As we crossed the road, I heard a loud crash and saw Phra Rueang caught on the truck’s bonnet before falling to the ground,” he said.

The truck driver, 24-year-old Wanchai from Nakhon Ratchasima, stated he was delivering parcels to Buriram. He admitted he did not see the monks due to the road’s curve. “I was driving at around 75–80 km/h. When I saw the monks crossing, it was too late to brake,” he said.

Police took the driver into custody and are proceeding with legal action. Dashcam footage from the truck is being used as evidence.

Don't come in the way of a delivery driver.

He admits 75 to 80 km/h.

How much to add?
