USB Ports on Extension Cords & Plug Bases

Featured Replies

How good are these USB ports for charging phones etc.?

Are the outputs 'clean' and device friendly?

Do you use them and for what purpose?

Never had any problem with either.

If they are in an AirB&B, I’d give them a miss due to security issues. If they are on your own extension cord unit, they are safe to use.

I have "charge only" cords for use in hotels etc. so no security issues.

The hotel I use in Cairo installed these as part of a room refurb they did in January this year. When I visited in July NONE of the ones in the room worked, the outlets were fine so it was the USB units that died.

They look neat but when a charger fails it's not a replacable unit the whole outlet plate has to go in the bin.

Those that did work (in another hotel) didn't do adaptive charging so they were slow, but at least they functioned.

On the long run, can they have any bad effect on the phone/battery?

I wouldn't have thought so, slow charging isn't likely to hurt anything.

There is of course always the possibility of a fault in a poorly designed unit allowing nasty voltages into the charging interface!! But that's also a possibility when using cheap after-market chargers.

Thank you Crossy. I was a bit reluctant to use these outlets all this time.
