Children among four killed in overnight attack on Kyiv

Kyiv faced intense Russian bombardment overnight, resulting in the deaths of four people, including two children, according to Ukrainian officials on Thursday. Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the drone and missile attacks on the capital as "massive." Military sources confirmed that at least 24 individuals were injured.

A five-storey building collapsed in the Darnytski district, and a fire broke out in a high-rise residential building in the nearby Dnipro district. This wave of attacks follows recent drone strikes targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure, which left over 100,000 homes without power, as reported by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, revealed one of the child victims was a 14-year-old girl. Moreover, at least five children were injured during the strikes. More than 20 districts were targeted, with buildings, including a kindergarten, set ablaze.

Over three and a half years since Russia's full-scale invasion, ground fighting shows no signs of ceasing. A new international push for a ceasefire was initiated by US President Donald Trump, who recently met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska and held discussions with Zelensky and European leaders in Washington.

Trump is advocating for a Putin-Zelensky summit. Zelensky supports the idea but is seeking security assurances from Western allies to guard against potential future Russian aggression.

This week, Zelensky met with Adm Sir Tony Radakin, head of Britain's armed forces, in Kyiv for talks on ending the conflict. Additionally, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff announced plans to meet Ukrainian representatives in New York, emphasizing ongoing dialogue with Russia.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas cautioned that conceding Ukrainian territory to Russia in a peace deal could be a "trap," highlighting the complexities of negotiating peace while safeguarding Ukraine's sovereignty.
