A 53-year-old man drowned on the morning of 28 August, after entering the historic moat in Nakhon Ratchasima city to catch fish. Rescue divers later recovered his body from the bottom of the water.

Emergency services were called to the moat behind Talad Thetsaban 5 market in Mueang District after witnesses reported that a man had gone under the water and failed to resurface.

The victim was identified as Suthep Kaglang, a local resident. On the bank, police found his shirt, trainers, a fishing net, a bottle of white spirits, drinking water and snack wrappers, suggesting he had been drinking with friends before entering the moat.

Witnesses said Mr Suthep had been sitting with a group of men at a nearby park before deciding to go into the water to fish. When he disappeared, onlookers shouted for help and called rescue workers.

Divers from the Sawang Metta Rescue Foundation spent around 30 minutes searching before locating the body at the bottom of the six-metre-deep moat. The man’s mother, who rushed to the scene, broke down in tears and prayed for the swift recovery of her son’s body.

Police said they believe alcohol may have played a role, or that the victim may have suffered cramp or shock from the water temperature.

The friends who had been drinking with Mr Suthep reportedly fled the scene. Police said the family does not suspect foul play but an autopsy will be carried out at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital before the body is released for religious rites.

Seeing many locals haven't learned to swim, it would be good for them and their children to acquire some life jackets before they enter the waterways. This goes for tourists that think they can fight the current and rips in Thailand's seas also
