Can you just walk into a branch (Bangkok Bank) and get a cashier's cheque for 800,000 baht, with just your bank book and passport?

Yes you can. In fact they will issue one for any amount, millions of Baht if needed.

    Yes i did that when i bought a condo, i may have provided the purchase agreement just so the Thai payee was correct

    Yep .... bank book, passport and details of payee.  Takes about 10 minutes for it to be printed in the branch.

     

    They can make it for 'Payee only'.

     

    Also, if the planned purchase falls through for some reason, you can pay it back into your own account.
