Banks and SIM providers

Featured Replies

Excuse me: but don't banks have direct contact with the various SIM providers to verify that the data on the SIM card and the passport match? Otherwise, if that weren't the case, sooner or later we'd all have to find our accounts blocked to verify this information. Or am I wrong?

People need to go to the bank and provide the sim receipt from the sim company otherwise it's another reason for an account freeze

I don't know if things have gone well so far, but I renewed my passport over a year ago. The bank has had all my new passport information since day one, but I've never updated it with the SIM provider. The account is in my name and mine alone, and my first name, last name, and date of birth match my SIM provider information, except for my passport number. Should everyone update their phones and update with the bank as well, or just those who use the bank app?

Didn't I point out in one of your related threads that e.g. Kasikorn points out that passport number has to match?

I have done it two days ago with my new passport.

Immigration. AIS, Kasikorn, Bangkok Bank.

All in one day. 250 km total.

You make a mountain out of a molehill.

I guess other banks handle it similarly.

So phone verification is only for who use the bank application?

You're absolutely right: but I'm afraid to go to the bank because if they see my visa type (DTV), I might run into problems. I opened the bank account seven years ago with a work permit and a Non-O visa, but now things have changed.

So, is SIM card data verification only for those who use the bank's app to transfer money?

You are screwed

My mobile has two SIM-slots. What happens when i switch to a foreign SIM and accidently start the K-App?

No, go to your bank and verify your sim

No, he isn’t. Once the account is opened, banks don't care about visa status.

I recently went to Kasikorn to update my details. I was on a 60 day visa exempt, when I set up my account I was on NonB with work permit. No issues at all.

Seven years ago... No, they're not going to close your account. You're over-thinking it. By the way, do you even have/use the app? If not, you probably don't need to do anything.

Don't have experience about this, but it is an issue to be aware of. Folks who've gone overseas had had some trouble with the banking apps, while having a foreign sim in the phone. Kind of a tricky area.

You could 1) switch to the foreign sim and open the app and find out. Might be good to know, and find out while here if there is any issue to resolve.

2) Always confirm the app is closed before you switch to the foreign sim.

3) To go further, disable the app in settings before you switch to the foreign sim, and after switching back to the domestic sim you can enable the app again.

But even if the app doesn't work, and it shouldn't, if opened while you are on the foreign sim, I believe things will be 'normal' once you are back on the domestic sim and open the app again. Would hope so, at least

Perhaps someone's who's had experience with this will comment.

I often use my Kasikorn app whilst in UK, connected with a UK sim.

I never used it. I download it the day my salary suppose to come in and uninstall immediately I got it. I am sometimes 90+ km far from the nearest ATM, so I am doing this sometimes.

Thanks for the info. Good to hear that. There have been reports in the forums of people having trouble with their bank apps and accessing them while overseas. One report, I think the poster said he couldn't use his app until he returned to Thailand. Maybe even had to go in to the bank to sort it out?

So there are bunch of possibilities, with different banks, apps, foreign locations, foreign sims....but your case, that's certainly a positive outcome.

I think, as long there is a Thai-SIM in slot #1 it works, independent from the country-IP of the network.

I may be wrong but I think you are confusing those with existing phones and installed apps and those who buy a new phone and or re-install the app. Normally you need to use mobile data from within Thailand to do so.

I use my SCB banking app in a phone here with a UK sim card and over wi fi - haven't used mobile data or the registered Thai number with it for 2 years.

Yes, could be. If overseas you don't want to be making changes, such as getting a new phone and trying to transfer the banking app, or do an  install of it on the new device. And using wifi when doing anything on the banking app is the way to go, cut the 'sim middleman' out of the equation.

I have used both bangkok and thanachart apps in uk using uk sim, only prop I had was when 1 required an update impossible with uk sim needed thai sim and mobile data only,

How did you get this?  It seems that  I cannot.

No problem. The app stil works if you are not connected to a Thai mobile network. Money transfers are still possible.
You can not install the app if you're not connected to a Thai 4/5G network. Once installed, no problem at all.

I did that with the Bangkok bank app using an Aussie SIM. That was the end of using the app until I went into a branch and sorted it out with help from a young lady and did it at the ATM.

I also recently set my transaction limits to zero using an AIS SIM in Australia. No problem at all but when I went to increase one of them from zero I got the message to go to a Bangkok bank branch. Do that on my next visit.
