Authorities have seized counterfeit goods worth more than 20 million baht in a major raid on shops and warehouses in the Sampheng wholesale district of Bangkok.

The operation was carried out at around 09.30 on 29 August, under the direction of Pol Lt Col Yutthana Praedam, Director-General of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and Pol Capt Wisanu Chimtrakun, Deputy Director-General. Officers from the DSI’s Intellectual Property Crime Bureau, together with the Special Operations Division, executed search warrants issued by the Intellectual Property and International Trade Court.

Raids targeted retail outlets in the busy Sampheng market as well as two commercial buildings being used as storage facilities in Bangkok’s Samphanthawong district. Representatives of trademark holders were present to observe the searches.

Officials confiscated over 200,000 counterfeit items, including bags, hats, scarves and socks carrying forged trademarks from various international brands. The seized goods are estimated to represent damages of at least 20 million baht.

The DSI confirmed that the haul has been submitted as evidence under the Trademark Act B.E. 2534 (1991) and its amendments. Investigators said they will expand their enquiries to track down the smuggling networks behind the counterfeit trade and identify those financing the operations.

In a statement, the DSI stressed that cracking down on intellectual property violations is vital to protecting consumers from potentially unsafe counterfeit products, safeguarding legitimate businesses and improving Thailand’s international standing in intellectual property enforcement.

The department urged the public to report suspected cases of intellectual property infringement via its nationwide hotline, 1202, which is free of charge.
