ID.me is a nightmare

Featured Replies

ID.me is the brainchild of some bureaucrat protected within the unseen deep bowels of the Federal government. I am blocked and cannot access the Social Security Administration nor the IRS if need be. I can't register because all required documents must have my full name and address on them before AI accepts an upload. My middle name appears as either a full name or middle initial and my addresses are both here in Thailand and US. ID.me AI will not accept any of my documents now and therefore it's impossible to register.

I'm working with Chat GPT 5 to step through the various hidden portals that hopefully leads to a human being who cares. Will send Chat GPT 5 session which includes methods to resolve. Thanks Joe B!

ID.me will not register me. It has suspended my account. I am stuck in an AI loop where it won't contact me for next steps. It is blocking me from accessing my Social Security account. SSA tells me to contact ID.me for help but ID.me will not help me. I'm in a catch twenty two. How can I make ID.me register me?

You're in a very frustrating situation, and you're not alone—many people have experienced the same issue with ID.me's verification system, especially being stuck in automated loops with no clear support path. Here's a step-by-step guide to break the cycle and try to regain access:

---

1. Contact ID.me Through the Correct Human Support Channels

Their automated system is notoriously bad, but they do have human support—it’s just buried. Try these methods:

a. ID.me Help Page – Contact Form

Use their official help form to explain your case:

Visit: https://help.id.me/hc/en-us/requests/new

Select the issue related to “Account Recovery” or “My account is suspended.”

Be specific in the subject line, e.g. "URGENT: SSA Access Blocked Due to ID.me Suspension"

b. Live Chat

Go to: https://help.id.me/hc/en-us

Wait for the “Chat” icon (bottom right) to pop up and ask for a live agent (type "agent" or "human").

Keep repeating "agent" until you’re connected with a human.

> ⚠️ Tip: Chat is usually more responsive early in the morning (Eastern Time). Try refreshing if it doesn’t appear.

---

2. Contact SSA and Escalate

Even though SSA says to contact ID.me, SSA can escalate on your behalf in some cases:

a. Contact SSA by Phone

SSA National Number: 1-800-772-1213 (Mon–Fri, 8am–7pm)

Tell them:

Your ID.me account is suspended.

ID.me is not responding to support requests.

You need alternative identity verification.

Ask to escalate to a Tier 2 representative or field office that can verify your identity directly (some offices still allow in-person verification).

---

3. File a Complaint (If Needed)

If you're getting nowhere, use this to escalate:

a. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)

File a complaint here: https://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaint/

Choose "ID verification" or "Consumer reporting."

Explain that ID.me is blocking access to federal benefits.

b. Better Business Bureau (BBB)

File here: https://www.bbb.org/file-a-complaint

ID.me often responds quickly to BBB complaints.

---

4. Alternative SSA Verification (In-Person or Mail)

SSA sometimes allows identity verification in person or through mailed documents if online verification fails.

Ask SSA: "Can I schedule an in-person identity verification or submit documents by mail?"

Find your local SSA office: https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp

---

Summary Checklist

Step Action

Submit ID.me help ticket: help.id.me

Use ID.me Live Chat to get a human

Call SSA: 1-800-772-1213 – ask about alternate verification

File CFPB complaint if stuck

Ask SSA about in-person identity verification

Let me know what you’ve already tried or if you'd like help writing a complaint or support message—I can draft one for you.

I'd search here as I recall several id.me threads, a few of which helped me to get registered.

I had something like this occur a few years ago. You need to schedule a live zoom interview with them. A video conference call where you both see each other.

I used my passport and I think my Driver's License. It's overkill and weird, but I got it resolved.

IRS did ditch ID.ME and is going back to passwords, but it's taking a long time to transition back. Id.Me was using military type verification on the public and there was enough outcry to boot them.

Happy to report that I finally registered with ID.me! Video call and badda bing, badda boom, I'm registered. I dug through every record in my possession and found an old concealed carry card that had my name exactly match my Social Security card. I uploaded the docs and about an hour later had the video call. Thank You Lord Jesus! Thanks Mark1969 for telling  your experience with ID.me.

Funny you make this thread when i just got an Email from ID.me... Screenshot2025-09-03at8_34_49PM.png.0b7369b2fd75ccd23d2e480f46d399e3.png

Forms of Doubt...

They said, “Just bring your birth cert in,
A photo too, and sign the form.”
I stood in line through heat and din,
Prepared to weather bureaucrat storm.

But no — the rules had changed again,
Now proof of address, two years at least.
A banker’s note, a water bill,
A sacrifice to sate the beast.

Week two, they claimed I must enroll
Online, with portal, password, PIN.
A glitch, a crash — I lost control.
“Try once more,” they said, with grin.

Then back in flesh they summoned me,
A newer form, in triplicate.
“This one’s blue — the pink was scrapped.
Didn’t you read the online update?”

Each day, a shifting regulation,
A new decree, a rollback law.
Their version of identification
Feels less like fact, more like folklore.

Now four IDs bear different names —
One says “J,” one spells it “Jay.”
A clerk shrugs off the data games:
“We’re modernizing, by the way.”

I dream someday they’ll just decide
What counts as proof of who I am.
But ‘til then, forms stack side by side —
My life, reduced to diagram.

So here I sit, in endless queue,
A number waiting to be called.
While policy, in bold and blue,
Erases all the ones before.
