Speaking on Monday, Pichai elaborated on the potential impacts of the court's decision, underscoring that Thailand's competitiveness within the region would remain unaffected. The discussion centres on the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit's ruling, which deemed most of Trump’s "reciprocal tariffs" illegal. The tariffs, initially imposed using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), have been contested, with the court finding that the former president overstepped his authority. While the tariffs remain in place pending a potential Supreme Court review, businesses continue to face these additional costs. Pichai explained that should the Supreme Court uphold the tariffs' legality, Thailand would face a reciprocal tariff rate of 19%. This rate would align with those of neighbouring economies, such as Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Cambodia. "Our competitiveness is preserved as every country in the region would pay the same rate," he commented. Conversely, if the court rules the tariffs illegal, Thailand would revert to previous tariff arrangements, maintaining existing trade relationships without new financial burdens. "Whether we continue with the negotiated rate or return to former rates, our trade stance remains secure," Pichai asserted. In addressing domestic concerns, Pichai also noted that Thailand's fiscal measures and investor confidence remain robust despite recent political changes. This follows the Constitutional Court’s decision to remove Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra over ethical standards violations. Pichai assured that the fiscal 2026 budget bill remains on track. With approval already obtained from the House and pending swift Senate deliberation, Pichai anticipates the budget act's implementation without disruption. "The next government can engage with the new budget seamlessly, ensuring uninterrupted economic governance," he reassured stakeholders. Amidst global tariff complexities and internal political transitions, Thailand's strategic economic resilience appears steadfast. With Pichai’s reassurances, the nation aims to sustain its competitive edge while navigating international and domestic challenges. Observers will closely watch the Supreme Court's forthcoming decision, yet Thailand signals readiness to adapt to any eventuality in its trade relations.
