Police in the Seim district of Phon Phisai, Nong Khai, have arrested a 20-year-old man who allegedly led a double life as a Buddhist monk by day and a burglar by night, stealing from local shops and school welfare outlets while under the influence of methamphetamine.

Officers from Seim Police Station apprehended Suphatchai, also known as “Game,” after spotting him attempting to break into a top-up phone kiosk outside a local grocery store on 3 September. Suphatchai tried to flee on a bicycle but was quickly captured. A search of his belongings revealed small pliers, screwdrivers and a wrench, believed to be tools for committing burglaries.

Investigations revealed that Suphatchai had carried out a series of thefts at five locations, including school welfare shops and mobile phone stores, sometimes returning to the same site multiple times. Security camera footage showed a man wearing long black trousers with white stripes, various shirts, a green camouflage cap obscuring his face and carrying a blue fabric bag with tools protruding from it. Incidents typically occurred at night between 23:00 and 04:00. Stolen items included cash, mobile phones, clothing and SIM cards.

Under the supervision of Pol. Maj. Gen. Thawatchai Thungpao, Provincial Police Chief of Nong Khai and other senior officers, local detectives and patrol units laid plans to catch the suspect. Suphatchai was ultimately detained during his attempted break-in.

Suphatchai admitted to the crimes, stating that he used the stolen money to buy methamphetamine, which he consumed before committing the burglaries. He also confirmed that he lived as a monk in a local temple but changed into civilian clothes at night to carry out his crimes. A subsequent search of his monastic quarters uncovered 43 methamphetamine tablets hidden in a plastic bottle on his bedside table. Additional stolen property was recovered, along with the clothing he had worn during the incidents.

A urine test conducted at Phon Phisai Hospital confirmed the presence of methamphetamine. Suphatchai admitted to six separate burglaries, including two at Seim Pittayakom School welfare shop, one at Ban Seim School welfare shop and one each at two mobile phone stores and a parcel service shop.

He has been charged with possession of a Category 1 narcotic (methamphetamine) for sale and consumption of a Category 1 narcotic. Additional charges related to his thefts are expected to follow after further questioning.

Good news! one less criminal living as a trusted monk captured. Why is it the temple was unaware of this mans misdeeds? How can he sneak out of the temple in the middle of the night in normal clothing without anyone seeing him?
