Optimal Days To Exercise

Featured Replies

I joined a gym a few days ago and have unlimited usage for 3 months, my wife too.

She wants to go nearly every day, she’s overweight too.

I fell going 2/3 days in a row is maybe not a good idea at my age, but maybe ok for her, being 10 years my junior.

Can a 68-year old lose more weight going to do aerobic exercise every day or alternate days, or other?

I tend to go 5 days a week. I have two routines which I use on alternate days. Plus for exercise I walk a lot.

I see, so do running one day, the step thing another, or weights, skipping.

Best results come from alternating workouts. Weights to maintain muscle, which burns more calories, and aerobic for the heart and to burn the calories. Losing weight, again, is more about what you eat than the exercise. Changing your lifestyle is the main point, ridding yourself and your wife's older habits that led to the weight gain, and adopting a new lifestyle based around healthier eating and more movement.

One negative thing, the gym has air con, not so much sweating. Maybe join a sauna too.

I wouldn't really recommend running as it is hard on the knees and ankles. Cycling (gym bicycle), weights. Walking will also burn off a lot of excess fat as well.

Sweating is not necessarily a sign of a good workout. I go to the gym 5 days a week and it has air conditioning. By the time I have finished my routine my T-shirt is soaking wet. The air conditioning they have is good but it doesnt stop you getting the exercise you need.

Exercise is easier in a comfortable setting. I used to work out in old gyms in Paterson, New Jersey, with no fans, to Randolph Airforce Base in San Antonio, with large fans, where you sweated your ass off, to training others for many years in 6 air conditioned gyms, and I always liked both. One was like training like Rocky did, and the other was like training with businessmen and women, but it is easier for beginners and those that aren't used to it, to train in a controlled environment. You can always sweat elsewhere, as sweating has you only losing water weight.

I went everyday......but the key is...... whatever you do....don't over do it......light weights with more repetitions.....if you start to pick up soft tissue injuries they take a long time to heal.

At 68 i would be doing strength/ kettlebell training to help stopping any muscle wastage ,cardio like brisk pacing on the walking machine is great as well

At the risk of teaching you to suck eggs.......Couch to 5K (nothing to do with JD Vance).......done that a few times now.

Can do daily. Split routine

Day 1 back n biceps

Day 2 chest and tries

Day 3 shoulders and legs

Day 4 rest

Repeat.

15 to 20 reps, 3 sets. 3 exercises per day.

Thats not overtraining.

I'm now 80 yo and I'm feeling very well apart from a constant allergy and a few aches and pains. I've cut back on everything especially booze and bread but after getting my weight from 95 kg to 87.5 kg my weight loss has come to a dead end. I walk 90 minutes at a brisk pace every day and I still don't lose weight any longer.

Going every day is not always best, especially at 68. Try doing aerobic exercise 3 or 4 times a week and use the other days for rest or light walking. That helps recovery and keeps progress steady. A good diet and a bit of strength work also make a big difference.
