Trang’s long-awaited new passenger terminal has finally opened for service, with its first commercial flight landing on the morning of 5 September, after years of delays and budget overruns.

The ฿1.07 billion facility, under construction since 2021, was originally due to be completed far earlier but was plagued by setbacks that stretched the project out to more than four years. The Department of Airports conducted a “soft opening”, with all domestic flights moved to the new terminal for the first time.

At 09.20, Thai AirAsia flight FD3241 from Don Mueang, Bangkok, touched down and became the first flight to use the terminal. Local dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Sakol Damrongkiatkul, Trang Provincial Administrative Organisation president Boonleng Losathapornpipit and representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and the Department of Airports, lined up to greet passengers with garlands, while traditional performances marked the milestone.

Passengers expressed excitement at using the modern facility, which at over 30,000 square metres is twice the size of the previous terminal. It can handle up to 1,200 passengers per hour (3.4 million annually)compared with just 600 per hour (1.7 million annually) at the old building. The new complex also provides parking for 700 vehicles.

Trang Airport is also undergoing a separate ฿1.77 billion runway extension, lengthening the strip from 2,100 metres to 2,990 metres. Once complete in 2028, it will allow the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747s, 777s and Airbus A330s, opening the possibility of direct international flights to Europe and other Asian destinations.

Currently, Trang is served by three airlines, Thai AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air, operating around 10 flights daily with 1,500–1,600 passengers.

Despite the celebrations, the launch was not without controversy. Locals noted that the originally bright turquoise roof of the new building had already faded significantly, sparking criticism online. Officials said the contractor was still within its warranty period and repairs were expected to restore the original colour by mid-September.

For now, however, officials and travellers alike are celebrating the long-awaited step forward. “This terminal represents not just an investment in infrastructure but in Trang’s future as a regional hub,” said Chakree Bumrungwong, Inspector General of the Ministry of Transport, who was present for the opening.
