Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet is making strides to mend ties with Thailand, following recent border skirmishes. In a letter to newly appointed Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, he expressed optimism for a peaceful future, despite ongoing disputes.

Hun Manet congratulated Anutin on his appointment, asserting his leadership could lead to "greater progress" for Thailand. Emphasising the importance of cooperation between the neighbouring countries, he expressed his hope that the two nations would "enjoy prosperity" and thrive in harmony.

He also made it a priority to rebuild trust and transform their shared border into a zone of "peace, cooperation, development, and shared prosperity." The remarks come in light of recent tensions, as Thai officials reported Cambodian military activity within Thailand's Ubon Ratchathani province.

The controversial construction by Cambodian forces allegedly violated a 2000 agreement, escalating to a skirmish on May 28. According to reports, Cambodian troops planted landmines that injured Thai soldiers, escalating the situation, reported the Bangkok Post.

As tensions mounted, Thailand closed border crossings in July, prompting further conflicts, including rocket attacks from Cambodia. Despite these challenges, Anutin aims for peaceful resolutions without territorial concessions.

The diplomatic efforts by both Prime Ministers aim to ease border tensions and foster stability in the region. The focus remains on dialogue and cooperation to avert further conflicts and rebuild relations.

I was previously told it's all about the oil/gas out in the sea but I'm now convinced more than ever this whole issue was about the proposed casinos in Thailand.

Anutin and the 'Peoples Party' are apparently both against the casinos which lets face it would have decimated Cambodias visitor numbers by which we're talking about the Chinese. Not the tour bus Chinese but the casino crowd - a very different crowd.

Macau opened up a whole Las Vegas style strip of casinos a long time back - I was there a month or two before it opened, it overtook the actual Las Vegas in revenue very quickly.

I'm sure the oil/gas argument between the two states lives on but something like the casinos would directly and negatively affect the revenue flows for the entire country - hence rising tensions which should now all disappear overnight in a matter of weeks - just in time for the high seasons in both countries....
