Russian attacks have struck Ukraine's main government building in Kyiv for the first time since the full-scale invasion. The strike damaged the roof and upper floors, sparking a fire, in what Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko has called an "enemy attack".

Tragically, four lives were lost across Ukraine during the latest wave of attacks, including that of a baby and a young woman in Kyiv's Svyatoshynsky district. Russia launched a staggering 800 drones and missiles, hitting 37 locations, with nine missiles and 56 drones making strikes that left swathes of devastation.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, branding them as deliberate crimes amidst potential diplomatic solutions. The strikes impacted cities such as Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, and Odesa, alongside the regions of Sumy and Chernihiv. Meanwhile, Russia claims to have targeted Ukraine’s military and infrastructure, inflicting damage on weapons and equipment locations.

The cabinet of ministers building, housing top government offices, was among those hit, potentially by a drone intercept. Mayor Vitali Klitschko noted a fire as a result of a UAV being shot down, highlighting the volatile situation in the heavily defended centre of Kyiv.

This assault marks a shift in Russia’s strategy, directly challenging the heart of Ukraine’s governance for the first time. The symbolic nature of the attack underscores continued aggression from Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite any previous peace rhetoric.

Witnesses described the shocking scenes. A large column of smoke was seen rising near Independence Square, while two Russian cruise missiles were heard and seen speeding through the sky before another thunderous explosion ensued.

Eyewitness Valentina recounted how her Kyiv flat’s windows shattered, covering her and her husband in glass. She mourned a neighbour and her baby who perished, and she feared for the hospitalised father, underscoring the human cost of these relentless strikes.

Footballer Georgiy Sudakov shared the destruction of his home on social media after a drone hit while his family was inside. Sudakov remains abroad on international duty, adding personal turmoil to the national crisis.

Elsewhere, Zaporizhzhia suffered significant damage with 17 wounded when civilian structures, including homes and a nursery, were struck. In Novopavlivka, a woman was killed by a Russian glide bomb, adding to the grim tally across the nation.

Notably, the conflict also touched Russian soil. Ukrainian drones targeted the Druzhba pipeline, striking in Bryansk. Alongside, Russian claims of intercepting 69 Ukrainian drones highlight the ongoing aerial struggle, reported the BBC.

The geopolitical tension deepens as world leaders react. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that Putin’s actions display impunity, while French President Emmanuel Macron announced allied commitments to secure Ukraine post-conflict. However, Putin’s warnings of targeting any deployed troops illustrate the complexity of brokering peace.

The assault on Kyiv’s government building signifies a bold and brazen intensification as Russia's invasion continues, marking another dark chapter in the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.

So in one sentence the "reliable source" the BBC says it's possible this was debris from a downed droned and in the next sentence intimates a deliberate strike. The former IMO is more likely.

Does it matter? I think not. No Russian drone, no Ukrainian attempt to shoot it down. Duh

I would love to see some "tit for tat": send a drone of to hit the Kremlin.

Point is it may not have been targeted so no change in strategic targeting as the "reliable" BBC asserts.

In a war government buildings and power infrastructure

should be the hardest hit.

Why did the Russians wait 3 years to get a minor

hit on that building ?

Time for a reciprocal strike by Ukraine on the Kremlin.
