Israel Must Improve Prisoner Nutrition Amid Gaza Hostage Talks

Israel’s Supreme Court has ruled that the government must provide adequate food to Palestinian prisoners, emphasizing that all detainees are entitled to sufficient nutrition to maintain a “basic level of existence.” The decision comes amid growing tensions as thousands of Palestinians remain in Israeli jails, including individuals held on terror charges and those detained since the Gaza conflict escalated in October 2023.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts over Gaza hostages continue. On Sunday, US President Donald Trump issued a “last warning” to Hamas, urging them to accept a deal for the release of Israeli hostages. Trump stated that Israel had already agreed to his terms and called on Hamas to reciprocate. In response, Hamas said it is ready to immediately engage in talks based on proposals from the US aimed at achieving a ceasefire.

Trump also expressed optimism that a deal would soon secure the release of all hostages, dead or alive. Of the 48 remaining hostages, around 20 are believed to still be alive. Israel has yet to formally respond to a partial release proposal, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisting that any agreement must ensure the return of all hostages and maintain Israel’s goal of total victory over Hamas.

Domestically, Netanyahu faces mounting pressure as thousands of Israelis protested on Saturday, demanding an end to the Gaza conflict and urging the government to secure the hostages’ release. The Supreme Court ruling on prisoner nutrition highlights another layer of scrutiny on Israel’s handling of detainees during a period of heightened conflict.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Israel’s Supreme Court orders improved nutrition for Palestinian prisoners.

  2. Trump urges Hamas to accept a hostage release deal; Hamas signals willingness.

  3. Netanyahu faces domestic protests while insisting on total victory over Hamas.
