Bangkok officials have issued a rabies warning across multiple districts after several animals tested positive for the disease. The alert focuses on encouraging residents to avoid stray animals and remain vigilant.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Public Health Veterinary Office has pinpointed a 5-kilometre danger zone around Soi Chaloem Prakiat Rama 9 Soi 49, Chaloem Prakiat Rama 9 Road in the Nong Bon subdistrict, Prawet district. This is a critical area where the threat has been identified, prompting swift action to protect the public.

Residents and visitors in the neighbouring areas of Prawet, Suan Luang, Lat Krabang, Saphan Sung, Bang Na, Phra Khanong, and Bang Phli districts of Samut Prakan are advised against any contact with stray animals. Both dogs and cats in these areas could potentially carry rabies, posing severe health risks.

Within these districts, specific subdistricts affected include Nong Bon, Dokmai, and Prawet in Prawet district; On Nut and Phatthanakan in Suan Luang; Thap Chang in Saphan Sung; Lat Krabang; Bang Na Nuea in Bang Na; Bang Chak in Phra Khanong; and Bang Kaeo and Racha Thewa in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan.

The Livestock Office Area 10 has officially declared a temporary animal disease outbreak zone from 9 September to 8 October. In this period, it is crucial for residents to stay observant and report any dubious animal behaviour to the authorities.

Officials have stressed the vital steps to take if bitten or exposed to an animal suspected of being rabid. The wound should be thoroughly washed with soap, followed by immediate medical attention to receive a rabies vaccine.

Recognising rabies in animals is essential. Signs include restlessness, aggressive behaviour, biting objects, stiffness, excessive drooling, and a drooping tongue. Those who see dogs or cats with these symptoms, or find any dead, should promptly contact the Dog Control and Shelter (Prawet) at 02-328-7460 or 02-328-7355.

Community cooperation is a cornerstone in halting the disease’s spread. Key preventive measures include steering clear of stray animals, ensuring pets are vaccinated, and reporting any suspected cases swiftly.

This outbreak serves as a poignant reminder that rabies is a significant hazard in urban environments. It is imperative for residents to adhere to all guidance, especially in the impacted districts, to safeguard both themselves and their animals.

Amarin TV has noted that the veterinary office will maintain close monitoring of the situation. Coordination with local officials is ongoing to manage the outbreak effectively. Residents should stay informed through official reports and strictly follow safety instructions.

As the situation evolves, it is crucial for everyone to act responsibly and contribute to a collective effort to mitigate the risks posed by rabies. Stay updated, stay safe, and take all necessary precautions to protect our communities.

If they rounded up all the mangy mongrels   as pictured above and kept them in a secure location instead of roaming the streets  then not only the rabies problem  but the noise, accidents and mauling incidents would be solved too.

That´s what you get when not shooting of the stray dog population
