Kirk Murder Suspect "Not Co-operating," Says Utah Governor

Utah Governor Spencer Cox says the man accused of killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk is refusing to cooperate with investigators and has not confessed to the crime.

Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested Thursday evening, roughly 33 hours after Kirk was fatally shot during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University. Kirk, 31, was addressing students as part of his “American Comeback Tour” when the shooting occurred.

In interviews with ABC News and CNN, Gov. Cox confirmed that while Robinson has remained silent, people close to him — including his roommate and partner — have been assisting investigators. Cox described the partner as “incredibly cooperative” and said authorities do not believe they had prior knowledge of the attack.

According to reports, Robinson allegedly discussed the shooting on the messaging app Discord shortly afterward, joking about being the gunman before admitting responsibility. Cox said Robinson’s friends initially dismissed the comments as jokes.

The governor also suggested Robinson had been “deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology,” citing information from the suspect’s friends and family. He emphasized that more details would be available once formal charges are filed.

Robinson is currently being held without bail in Utah County Jail on suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice. Investigators are interviewing acquaintances to determine a motive.

Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, had built a large following among conservative youth. His killing has sparked national debate over political violence, online radicalization, and the role of social media platforms.

Key Takeaways

  • Non-cooperation: Suspect Tyler Robinson has not confessed and is refusing to cooperate with police.

  • Social media link: Robinson allegedly joked on Discord about the shooting before admitting involvement.

  • Investigation ongoing: Friends, family, and Robinson’s partner are cooperating; motive remains unclear.

And that’s the guy the rightwing want us to believe radicalized the killer.

He is, of course, totally within his rights to not confess and not cooperate.

That is still the case in the USA isn't it?

Incidentally, how long can they hold him without charges? In the UK it is normally 24 hours, exceptionally 36 hours. Any longer ( up to 96 hours requires the consent of a judge - rarely given).
