Cambodian soldiers opened fire at a border fence along the Thai-Cambodian border in Sisaket, Thailand, yesterday. The incident led Thai troops to maintain their positions without returning fire, focusing instead on monitoring the area for any further activity. This action occurred at around 1:20 pm in the Sao Thong Chai subdistrict, highlighting ongoing tensions between the two countries.

According to a statement by the 2nd Army, four Cambodian soldiers fired three rounds near Thailand’s Pa Man outpost. The Royal Thai Army (RTA) emphasized that Thai troops showed restraint by not retaliating. The RTA pointed out that such actions by the Cambodian military violate the ceasefire agreement intended to prevent such provocations.

The RTA's statement referred to recent General Border Committee and Regional Border Committee meetings, where both nations agreed to avoid any provocations and remove weapons from the frontline. Despite these agreements, the recent firing raises concerns about the sincerity of Cambodia’s commitments according to Thai officials.

Adding to the tensions, a drone was discovered by Thai soldiers in the Sam Tae area of Kantharalak district later that day. Both Thai and Cambodian forces remain on high alert, with the RTA stressing their readiness to appropriately address any developments. However, Thailand's priority remains avoiding unnecessary clashes and maintaining order.

Historically, the Thai-Cambodian border, particularly near Sisaket and the Preah Vihear temple, has been a hotspot for disputes. Recent diplomatic talks had seemed to promise stability, but the latest border incident renews fears of potential unrest.

Moving forward, military officials are closely monitoring the situation, committed to safeguarding Thai territory while preventing escalation. Both sides have fortified their positions, with Thai troops continuing to observe and report any irregularities in troop movement or behavior.

Key Takeaways

  • Cambodian soldiers violated a ceasefire by firing at a Thai border fence.
  • Thai forces maintained discipline, avoiding retaliation to prevent escalation.
  • Tensions persist due to historical disputes; further developments are monitored.
