Police in Masbate have arrested nine foreigners, accused of illegal mining activities, announced the Philippine National Police (PNP) on September 24. Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. stated that the arrests followed complaints from local residents concerning the mining in Barangays Cabangcalan and Pangle, Aroroy town. The arrest took place on September 22, where the mining operation was confirmed illegal, involving Chinese nationals.

 

Heavy equipment was confiscated during the operation, including dump trucks, backhoes, a Sino truck trailer, loaders, a generator set, and vehicles. Nartatez emphasized that the PNP remains firm against illegal mining and immigration violations by foreigners, highlighting the threat these actions pose to the environment and national security. Nartatez praised the police for their swift response leading to the arrests.

 

The arrested individuals have been handed over to the Bureau of Immigration for legal processing. This incident points to ongoing issues of illegal mining and its impact on local communities and the environment. The PNP has taken a strong stance, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement against such activities to protect both natural resources and legal integrity.
