A Chonburi municipality is facing scrutiny after a popular watchdog Facebook page alleged misuse of public funds during a study trip to Kanchanaburi. According to the page “Operasiin Ma Hfao Baan” (Operation Watchdog), the municipality allocated 1 million baht for a three-day programme, but much of the time was spent on leisure activities rather than training. The revelation has drawn widespread public criticism regarding the use of taxpayer money.

The trip, held between 28 and 30 August 2025, was part of a project described as staff capacity development. Organisers hired three tour buses and one van to transport about 150 participants to Kanchanaburi. The official programme included training sessions on the philosophy of sufficiency economy, but the schedule reportedly showed limited actual instruction.

On the first day, participants attended a two-hour morning lecture, followed by free time that included swimming and rafting, despite a planned afternoon training session. The next day saw another lecture in a hotel beginning at 1pm, with the evening spent at a dinner party. The final day featured another session at a military camp, after which attendees visited souvenir shops before returning home.

The Facebook post stated: “Study trip for 1 million baht, rafting and feasting to their heart’s content.” It quickly went viral, drawing hundreds of comments from users questioning the value of the trip. Many highlighted that the funds could have been directed to projects with more tangible benefits for local communities.

The allegations have amplified concerns about transparency and accountability in the management of municipal budgets. Observers noted that similar cases of study trips being used for leisure have previously sparked debate about the effectiveness of government spending. The scrutiny could pressure local administrations to tighten controls on such activities in the future.

Authorities from the municipality in question have yet to issue a formal statement in response to the criticism. It remains to be seen whether any internal or external review will be conducted to examine the expenditure. Calls for better oversight are expected to grow as residents demand more efficient use of public resources.

Key Takeaways

• A Chonburi municipality spent 1 million baht on a three-day study trip to Kanchanaburi.

• Reports indicate only a few hours of training took place, with most time spent on leisure.

• The case has sparked public criticism over government spending transparency.

One of the perks of the job.  Lots of politicians go on junkets ostensibly to acquire knowledge to benefit their country.  Strangely none seem to have visited the Netherlands to find out how to deal with water running downhill.

Nothing wrong with this. It is good for team building. I hope they did enjoy this trip.

Right, and 6.666THB per person for 3 days (transport, accommodation, food, entertainment ...) is very modest. The article and the fuss seems to be much ado about nothing.
