Police units in the Bicol region have been placed on heightened alert due to the intensifying severe tropical storm "Opong" (international name "Bualoi"), anticipated to make landfall by Friday. Police Regional Office-5 Director, Police Brig. Gen. Nestor Babagay Jr., has instructed units to facilitate preemptive evacuations, focusing on low-lying, coastal, and flood-prone communities. With about 367 personnel from the Reactionary Standby Support Force deployed, search, rescue, and retrieval teams are also on standby to provide necessary aid.

The decision comes as the region braces for potential impacts from the storm, emphasizing proactive measures to safeguard communities. Previous storms have highlighted the importance of prompt evacuation and readiness among rescue teams to mitigate casualties and property damage. PRO-5's actions aim to leverage lessons learned from past storm impacts in the region.

Residents are urged to prioritize safety by following local officials' guidance, as emphasized by Babagay. The heightened alert status encompasses directives for local units to conduct comprehensive checks and coordinate closely with disaster response agencies. Weather experts have noted the increasing intensity of Opong, projecting significant rainfall and strong winds as it approaches.

Looking ahead, continued monitoring of the storm's path is crucial, with updates expected from meteorological agencies. Authorities are prepared to adjust their strategies as needed to ensure public safety and minimize disruptions. The public is advised to stay informed through official channels for the latest weather advisories and evacuation notices.
