Four children died and eight were injured after an explosion in Barangay Marulas, Valenzuela City on September 24. The Northern Police District (NPD) confirmed arrests related to the incident, including the suspected owner of the firecrackers and the proprietors of the house where the explosives were stored without permits. This violates Republic Act 7183, which regulates firecracker storage and safety.

The blast occurred in a residence on Pisces Street, Batimana Compound. Responding officers detected pyrotechnic odors and found firecracker remnants. Victims included twin seven-year-old girls, a 13-year-old girl, and a two-year-old boy. Injuries were sustained by adult men and women, along with four minor children aged nine, seven, and five.

The incident has prompted calls for stricter firecracker regulations from safety advocates. There is pressure for enhanced monitoring, more severe penalties, and increased public awareness efforts. Valenzuela City Mayor Weslie Gatchalian led a meeting with multiple agencies to address accountability and improve safety measures.

In response, the commander of NPD Sub-Station 3 has been relieved of duty pending an investigation into oversight failures. The arrested suspects face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple fatalities, injuries, and property damage under Article 365 of the Revised Penal Code, alongside violations of Republic Act 7183.

Authorities pledged a swift investigation to ensure justice. They have temporarily withheld the names of those arrested pending the filing of charges.
