We now report on two road accidents which occurred here in Pattaya leaving a total of eight people badly injured.

We begin at the front of Soi 2 on the Central Pattaya Road where Sawang Boriboon Rescue Units responded to a crash involving a Baht Bus and a motorbike. Police also responded to the crash which appears to have been caused by a badly parked Baht Bus Number 68. According to witnesses and the two injured people on the motorbike, the Baht Bus broke sharply in order to receive two foreign customers. The motorbike driven by Khun Mayooree aged 19 was unable to stop in time and collided with the rear of the bus. A passenger on the bike, Khun Chachawan also aged 19 was also injured in the crash. They were taken to Hospital where they are now recovering from their injuries. Police tell us they will prosecute the Baht Bus Driver on a charge of reckless driving endangering life.

The second and more serious accident comes from the Sukumvit Road in Jomtien which left six people injured. Police Lieutenant Colonel Egadit from Dongtan Police Sub-Station was assigned to the case and joined rescue workers at the scene of the crash which involved a coach carrying Chinese Tourists and a minibus. Witnesses mentioned that the Coach was initiating a u-turn maneuver and the fast approaching minibus which was traveling to Bangkok failed to see the coach and a high speed collision took place. Two Chinese Tourists inside the coach, Miss Huali Ping aged 46 and Miss Jiang Ying aged 34 and their Thai Tour Guide, Khun Taworn aged 53 sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Hospital. Two passengers inside the minibus were also rushed to Hospital, however the driver of the minibus, was trapped inside the cab and it took rescue workers some time before he was released. He sustained serious leg and upper body injuries and was rushed to Hospital in a serious condition. The driver of the Coach, Khun Tongshai aged 50 remained at the scene and is now under investigation by Police who may charge him with driving offences in the near future.

The Thai motorcyclist drive so fast around Pattaya it's not surprising they can't stop in time. As a motorcyclist around town I expect baht buses to stop unexpectedly at any time....that's what they do.

ive been to patts 3 times now and must admit even thinking about the way people drive sends a chill up me. On my last trip we were in minibus just turning ot out of soi lk metro (to return to airport for flight home) and i thought "um that bikes going to hit us" and it did, minor miracle that no one was badly injured. Are you regarded as being a wus if you wear a helmet? i dont think ive ever seen a thai wear a helmet on a bike?

You must have some courage to drive your bike there

I actually feel way less rage when on the motorcycle that in the truck or car.

I agree. You have to take the good with the bad, and although motorcycles are definitely a riskier form of transport, it's great to be able to get around traffic jams instead of sitting there and stewing.

I drive a motorbike in Pattaya, never like to take my car, because of parking, traffic jams etc.

Yes, indeed it is riskier, but as long as you are prepared for the unexpected, you are about ok. Be prepared that any car will enter the mainroad, not caring about any approaching bike. After some months you know the risky corners and crossings.

Surely, being aware is not a life insurance, but that's make the difference between you and the usual sleepy and careless Thai rider.
