The Department of Justice in the Philippines has extended the deadline for businessman Atong Ang to submit his counter-affidavit regarding the case of the missing cockfighting enthusiasts. Originally set for September 29, the deadline is now moved to November 3, following the submission of additional documents by complainants. The PNP-CIDG has provided new evidence, including USB drives with supposed proof against Ang and co-respondents, requiring them to present their counter-affidavits by November 3.

The case gained attention when families of 34 missing cockfight enthusiasts filed complaints against Ang, actress Gretchen Barretto, and others, accusing them of crimes like kidnapping and murder. This follows allegations by whistleblower Julie Patidongan that Ang and Barretto masterminded the disappearances between 2021 and 2022. Barretto has denied involvement, submitting her counter-affidavit on September 18.

Defense attorney Lorna Kapunan has challenged the evidence submitted by the PNP-CIDG, particularly questioning the authenticity of a USB drive that allegedly contains a TikTok interview with Ang. Kapunan argues that the video seems fabricated and has been artificially generated. She also represents Ang in a separate case against whistleblower Patidongan, filed in July.

The DOJ’s extension provides Ang and other accused individuals more time to prepare their defense. As the November deadline approaches, attention will focus on the authenticity of the evidence and the responses from the accused. The outcome of this high-profile case could have significant implications for all parties involved.

Key Takeaways

  • DOJ extends the counter-affidavit deadline to November 3 for Atong Ang.
  • PNP-CIDG submits new evidence, including USB drives.
  • Defense challenges authenticity, citing potential fabrication.
