changing a regular size PDF file to make it Kindle accessible

Featured Replies

Apparently, this means changing the PDF from a document this is 8.5 X 11 to a document that is 4.5 X 6

Can you do this?

If so, how?

Try the software “Calibre”

It can change PDF to mobi, epub, lit, etc.

You want the mobi format for Kindle.
Calibre is the best program for e-readers. It’s free, and besides converting formats, it’s a fill service book manager/reader.

You can read PDFs on a Kindle by using the "Send to Kindle" service to automatically convert the PDF into a Kindle-compatible format, transferring it to your Kindle device via a USB cable by copying the file into the "documents" folder, or sending the PDF directly from the Kindle app on your phone or tablet. While directly transferring a PDF works, converting it often provides a better reading experience with features like highlighting and note-taking.

Using Send to Kindle (Recommended)
This method converts your PDF to a Kindle-compatible format, offering a smoother reading experience.

  • Select your PDF: Choose your PDF file from your device.

  • Choose conversion options: Select options to "make layout adjustable" for better text wrapping on your e-reader.

  • Send the file: Send the file, and it will appear in your Kindle library, ready to read.
  1. Find the Send to Kindle method: You can use the web-based tool by visiting amazon.com/sendtokindle or the Kindle app on your phone or tablet.

In order to send a doc to Kindle with Amazon, you need to register the email address from where you send the doc as "Kindle Adress" with Amazon. In the Re field it is recommended to write CONVERT. I have never done this for PDFs though. I know it works for most e-book formats (Epub etc.).

I agree that Calibre is a good program.

Conversions from Epub to mobi are almost always seamless.

But when I convert PDFs to mobi on Calibre, most of the time the result is basically unreadable.

Yes, you will lose the formatting if you convert PDF to MOBI in Calibre. It's especially a problem if your PDF contains tables or charts or graphs.

You can display native PDF's on the Kindle, but since PDF is a static format, the pages will be scaled down to fit the Kindle screen (though you can pinch zoom to see details). So I mainly view PDF's (such as manuals) on my laptop rather than the Kindle.
