A devastating 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck northern Cebu on Tuesday night, claiming at least 69 lives and injuring more than 140 people. In response, President Marcos ordered the full mobilization of government agencies for rescue and relief operations. The hardest-hit area, Bogo City, is seeing concentrated search and rescue efforts, with the number of casualties expected to rise as operations continue.

The earthquake, with its epicenter 17 kilometers northeast of Bogo City, caused significant destruction, trapping residents in collapsed structures. Rescue teams, including army troops and civilian volunteers, are actively searching for survivors amidst challenging conditions, exacerbated by rain and damaged infrastructure. The national government, led by President Marcos, has dispatched officials to oversee aid distribution and infrastructure assessments.

Experts express concerns about the rising death toll and emphasize the importance of rapid response during "golden hours" for search and rescue. Departments such as Public Works, Energy, and Health are coordinating efforts to restore infrastructure, power, and provide medical assistance. Globally, countries like Canada, Japan, the EU, Australia, and the US have extended their condolences and readiness to assist.

In the coming days, Philippine agencies are expected to manage overlapping crises, as regions previously affected by storms and typhoons gain additional resources. Recovery plans involve large-scale distribution of food packs and restoration of essential services. Local governments have declared states of calamity to expedite access to funds, while church and school buildings are undergoing structural assessments for safety.
