Vietnam may soon permit foreign students to work part-time, with a cap of 20 hours per week, to aid in living expenses and provide valuable cultural experience. The proposal, part of a draft resolution by the Ministry of Education and Training, aims to align Vietnam with global practices seen in countries like the U.K., U.S., and New Zealand. This change is expected to enhance Vietnam's appeal as an educational destination.

Currently, Vietnam lacks regulations on part-time work for international students. The proposed resolution has been submitted to the National Assembly, aiming to introduce a common global standard. Other countries allow students to work during school terms, with New Zealand planning to increase the cap from 20 to 25 hours in November.

The Ministry believes that allowing students to work would promote fairness and reciprocity, thereby attracting more international enrollments. By the end of 2024, Vietnam had nearly 22,000 international students, a 9-year high, with around 80% coming from Laos and Cambodia. Popular universities include Hanoi University and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

Alongside the student work hours proposal, the draft resolution includes suggestions for granting 5-year visas and work permit exemptions for foreign experts and scientists with doctoral degrees employed at Vietnamese universities. This step aims to foster academic and cultural exchange.

If the proposal is approved, Vietnam would join other nations in offering similar opportunities, potentially boosting its competitiveness in the global education market. The decision might catalyze an increase in foreign student enrollment, enhancing cultural diversity and contributing to the economic sector.

Key Takeaways

  • Vietnam plans to allow foreign students part-time work capped at 20 hours weekly.
  • The proposed change aims to align with global practices and attract more students.
  • Additional visa reforms are suggested to retain foreign experts and scientists.
