Police in Bangkok arrested a man after discovering a firearm and illegal drugs during a roadside inspection on 2 October 2025. The arrest took place at a smoke emission checkpoint on Ram Inthra Road, causing disruption to traffic in the area.

At 12:50, traffic police led by Pol Maj-Gen Siam Boonsom, alongside senior officers including Pol Maj-Gen Thawat Wongsang, Pol Col Damrongsak Sawang-ngam, and others, set up the checkpoint at kilometre 9 of Ram Inthra Road, Khan Na Yao district. They stopped a Isuzu pickup truck from Bangkok) driven by a 41-year-old man, Mr Pinu, after his behaviour appeared suspicious.

The driver abandoned his vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Police pursued and detained him nearby. A search of the vehicle revealed a CZ-75 semi-automatic pistol without a registration number, loaded with an 11-round magazine of 9mm ammunition concealed in a seat crevice wrapped in a pink cloth. Officers also found eight bags containing a total of 4.2 grams of crystal methamphetamine (“ice”) and four bags of methamphetamine tablets (“yaba”), hidden inside a brown leather bag under the driver’s seat.

Mr Pinu admitted ownership of the firearm and drugs. A subsequent urine test confirmed the presence of illicit substances. Police charged him with possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence, carrying a firearm in public without cause, and possession of Category 1 drugs. He was taken with the seized items to Bang Chan Police Station for further investigation.

The checkpoint is part of ongoing measures by Bangkok police to tackle air pollution and crime. Senior police officers emphasised the dual aim of enforcing environmental regulations and intercepting criminal activity. The incident also highlights the use of smoke checkpoints as opportunities to detect unrelated offences.

Authorities said the case will proceed through the criminal justice system and the suspect may face lengthy legal proceedings if convicted. Police intend to maintain similar operations in other districts to enhance public safety and environmental compliance.
