Authorities in Narathiwat are continuing the investigation into a major gold shop robbery at the Big C shopping mall in Su-ngai Kolok on 5 October 2025, linking it to insurgent funding shortages. Around 20 armed men seized, a now reported, approximately 600 baht-weight of gold jewellery worth about 35.7 million baht, injuring a soldier during their escape. The incident involved explosions, stolen vehicles and a coordinated multi-group assault.

The attack began at around 18:30 when a suspicious object, believed to be a 15kg gas cylinder, was placed near the Provincial Electricity Authority office. Three minutes later, armed suspects fired shots into the air before entering the Yaowarat Bangkok Gold Shop and stealing the gold. Two explosions followed as the group fled and metal caltrops were scattered to block pursuit. Two stolen pickup trucks used in the robbery were later found abandoned in Waeng district.

Lt. Gen. Naratip Poinok, commander of the Fourth Army Region, linked the robbery to the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) insurgency, citing similar previous attacks including ATM robberies on 31 August 2025 and a 60-million-baht gold shop heist in Songkhla in 2019. He described the perpetrators as “bandits, not ideologues”, suggesting the group acted to secure funding following crackdowns on drug trafficking and other illicit trades. Authorities have launched a full-scale manhunt, increasing deployments and coordinating with Malaysian counterparts to prevent cross-border escape.

Police, including senior Narathiwat officers, recovered fingerprints and CCTV footage and confirmed the theft involved three coordinated groups, one to seize vehicles, one to carry out the robbery, and one to plant explosives. The stolen vehicles were a Toyota Vigo and an Isuzu D-Max, both recovered and under forensic examination. Authorities have warned the public against sheltering suspects, citing penalties of up to two years in prison and fines of 40,000 baht under Section 189 of the Criminal Code.

The incident has heightened security concerns in the southern border provinces, with further investigations underway. Authorities continue to review CCTV along possible escape routes and call on the public to provide any relevant information. The Fourth Army Region remains in full readiness to prevent similar attacks and ensure public safety.
