France has plunged deeper into political uncertainty after Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu resigned just 26 days into the job.

The surprise move came a day after he announced his new cabinet, which faced immediate backlash from across the political spectrum. His short-lived tenure makes Lecornu the third French prime minister to step down since December.

Following his resignation, President Emmanuel Macron asked Lecornu to draft a “stability plan” for the nation by Wednesday evening, in hopes of calming markets and restoring confidence. French stocks tumbled on Monday amid fears that the government’s ongoing turmoil will hinder progress on critical economic reforms.

Lecornu’s cabinet choices drew intense criticism, with opposition parties threatening to reject them in the National Assembly. The appointment of former finance minister Bruno Le Maire as defence chief proved especially divisive. Le Maire later withdrew from consideration in an effort to ease tensions.

This latest political crisis follows the collapse of François Bayrou’s government in September, when his budget proposal failed to gain parliamentary support. Bayrou himself replaced Michel Barnier, who was forced out in December. The rapid succession of prime ministers has fuelled concerns over France’s political stability and its ability to address mounting economic challenges.

Key Takeaways:

Sébastien Lecornu resigned as France’s prime minister after only 26 days in office.

President Macron has tasked him with creating a “stability plan” within 48 hours.
