The Department of Health–Health Emergency Management Bureau (DOH–HEMB) and the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) visited Medellin, Cebu on Thursday, October 9, to deliver Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) to residents affected by a recent 6.9 magnitude earthquake. This initiative aimed to help communities process their experiences and emotions, fostering resilience and mental well-being after the disaster. The MHPSS program involved activities in Barangays Maharuhay, Dalingding Sur, Gibitngil, and Mahawak, offering residents a chance to share their experiences and learn coping strategies.

The program aligns with the DOH’s goal to address not just the physical but also the psychological impact of disasters. According to a social media post by Cebu Province, the initiative demonstrates the DOH’s commitment to holistic recovery by nurturing both physical and emotional health during crises. The visiting mental health team comprised Kevin T. Crispino from DOH-HEMB along with Malagueña M. Serquina, Sibyl B. Celestial, Precious A. Gesta, Mary Jane L. Diaz, Michael S. Patriarca, Constancio C. Paubsanon Jr., Joana Franchesca Y. Abuel, and Melvin E. Payongayong from NCMH.

Experts emphasize the importance of mental health interventions following disasters to help communities cope with trauma. The MHPSS program represents an ongoing commitment to mental health as a critical aspect of disaster recovery. By hosting these activities, the DOH aims to bolster community resilience and equip residents with the tools needed for emotional recovery.

Looking forward, the initiative sets a precedent for incorporating mental health support into emergency response strategies. As communities rebuild physically, ongoing psychological support will be essential in areas frequently affected by natural disasters. Future plans may include expanding such programs to other regions in the aftermath of similar events.

Key Takeaways

  • The DOH and NCMH provided mental health support to Cebu residents after an earthquake.
  • The MHPSS program focused on emotional recovery and resilience.
  • Future initiatives may expand mental health support in disaster-stricken regions.
