A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 struck Davao Oriental at 9:43 a.m. on Friday, October 10, causing significant concern across multiple regions. Initially reported at 7.6, it was later revised by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake’s epicenter was 43 kilometers northeast of Manay, Davao Oriental, with a shallow depth of 23 kilometers, resulting in varying intensities throughout affected areas.

The regions experienced different intensity levels, with intensity V recorded in Compostela, Davao de Oro, and several other locations. Phivolcs reported intensity IV in Tacloban and parts of Bukidnon, while Iloilo and Eastern Samar experienced intensity III quakes. Intensity II tremors were slightly felt in Sorsogon and Negros Oriental, among others. The quake's tectonic origin is attributed to an active fault movement near the area, with possible aftershocks expected.

This event follows a devastating earthquake in Cebu province on September 30, which was a magnitude 6.9. That quake resulted in 72 fatalities, displaced over 20,000 residents, and caused widespread infrastructure damage. The recent earthquake in Davao Oriental raises concerns of similar consequences in the affected areas, prompting authorities to issue warnings and prepare for possible damages.

Experts note the significance of the earthquake's depth and proximity, emphasizing preparedness for aftershocks. Residents are urged to remain alert, as the possibility of structural damage could impact local infrastructure and communities. Emergency services are on standby, ready to assist those in need.

Looking forward, the focus will be on assessing the damage and ensuring public safety. Phivolcs continues to monitor seismic activity and will update with further information as it becomes available. The authorities emphasize the importance of community preparedness and adherence to safety guidelines during such seismic events.

Key Takeaways

  • A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Davao Oriental, affecting several regions.
  • This occurrence follows a recent 6.9 earthquake in Cebu that caused significant damage.
