Police and local authorities have arrested a 38-year-old man who opened fire on police officers and a local official in Nong Bua Lamphu after a night of heavy drinking and alleged drug use. The suspect, identified as Mr. Montree, was captured on 13 October 2025 after fleeing into a sugarcane field following the incident that left two people injured.

The incident began on 12 October when Montree, reportedly intoxicated and shouting at neighbours, was approached by community leaders who attempted to calm him. Known to have a history of drug use, he reacted violently, firing a rifle at the group. The shots struck Itthiphon, 55, a subdistrict deputy headman, in the left thigh and Pol Col Krit, deputy commander of Nong Bua Lamphu Provincial Police, in the right calf during an attempt to negotiate. Both men were hospitalised with non-life-threatening injuries.

Montree managed to flee his home at around 02:00 on 13 October, prompting a perimeter lockdown around Ban Huai Ham Tang village in Pa Mai Ngam Subdistrict. Pol Maj Gen Kraismut Thaboran, the provincial police commander, coordinated a large-scale manhunt involving officers from Provincial Region 4, Nong Bua Lamphu Provincial Police and local administrative units. He was located later that day hiding in dense sugarcane fields.

Police stated the arrest was executed using strict tactical procedures to prevent further violence. Montree was taken into custody without injury or further gunfire. During questioning, he appeared incoherent but admitted to being drunk and confirmed he was responsible for the shooting. Authorities said he had never undergone psychiatric treatment before.

Montree now faces initial charges of attempted murder of public officials (two counts) and possession of a firearm without permission. He has been handed over to investigators for legal proceedings.
