Most Filipinos expressed anger and fear over a multibillion-peso corruption scandal involving flood control projects, according to Octa Research's latest survey. From September 25 to 30, the Tugon ng Masa survey found that 60% of the 1,500 adults polled felt anger or outrage, while 30% experienced fear and anxiety. Only 9% expressed sadness, and a mere 1% remained hopeful.

Octa's statement confirmed a strong majority's frustration with corruption in government infrastructure projects. The survey also showed a preference for the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) over political bodies like the House of Representatives and the Senate for investigating the scandal. Forty-six percent of respondents believe ICI should lead the probe, while 23% preferred the Senate and 13% the House.

The findings suggest a demand for independent oversight and integrity in corruption investigations. This sentiment highlights public skepticism towards political institutions and the need for transparent accountability mechanisms. The scandal involved alleged kickbacks of up to 30% on flood control project contracts, escaping scrutiny due to legislative budget insertions.

In response to the lack of trust, the House halted its infra-committee investigation, and the Senate suspended its blue ribbon committee probe. Meanwhile, 83% of Filipinos supported President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s decision to expose flood control contractors, sparking further congressional revelations. However, 3% of respondents disagreed with his actions.

Key Takeaways

  • 60% of Filipinos feel anger over flood control corruption.
  • ICI is preferred for leading the investigation over political bodies.
  • 83% agree with President Marcos Jr.'s contractor exposure.
