A 93-year-old woman in Phetchabun narrowly survived after being bitten by a cobra while sleeping under her stilted house. The victim, identified as Mrs. Thong Prathumthong, was rushed to Phetchabun Hospital in serious condition but is now recovering and breathing unaided after treatment in intensive care. Doctors say she could return home within days if her wound shows no signs of infection.

The incident occurred around midday on October 12, 2025, at Mrs. Thong’s residence in Moo 14, Ban Yawee, Wang Chomphu subdistrict, Mueang Phetchabun district. Her grandson, Mr. Suwat Deekhanu, 53, said he was repairing an engine about 50 metres away while his wife sold noodles nearby. Suddenly, he heard his grandmother shouting for help, claiming she had been bitten by a snake.

When he rushed to her, he found bite marks on her left middle finger but could not locate the snake. He immediately transported his grandmother to hospital for emergency care. During that time, a relative living in another province reviewed footage from CCTV cameras installed to monitor the elderly woman and identified the attacker as a cobra. The information was promptly relayed to hospital staff.

Mr. Suwat added that no cobras had ever been seen in the area before. He recalled spotting a toad hopping away under the house as he ran to his grandmother’s aid, suggesting the snake may have been pursuing its prey before striking the sleeping woman. The family’s home is a traditional wooden structure with a clean concrete space beneath where Mrs. Thong often rests during the day. Behind the house, however, dense vegetation and a small kitchen garden could have provided cover for the snake.

Doctors later performed a minor incision to drain blood from the swelling at the bite site and Mrs. Thong has since been able to breathe independently after her ventilator was removed. Her condition continues to improve, and she is expected to return home within two to three days, provided no complications arise.
