Judge Halts Trump Admin's Shutdown Layoffs

In a significant legal move, a judge has temporarily blocked layoffs of thousands of federal workers during the ongoing government shutdown initiated by the Trump administration. This follows the administration's confirmation that around 4,000 layoffs had already begun across several agencies.

US District Judge Susan Illston sided with two unions, granting their request to halt layoffs at over 30 agencies. She noted the administration's improper use of the funding lapse, which began on 1 October, for downsizing. Judge Illston highlighted political motives, referencing President Trump's statements about targeting "Democrat agencies."

A US justice department lawyer argued the unions should approach a federal labour board first, but the Trump administration plans to appeal. Notices have already been sent to employees at major departments, including Treasury, where over a quarter of the cuts are slated. Departments such as Health and Human Services, Education, and Homeland Security have also been affected.

Amidst these developments, two major unions filed a lawsuit, claiming layoffs during a funding lapse are non-essential and unjustified, as most federal workers remain on furlough without pay. The unions successfully sought an emergency restraining order from Judge Illston while the case proceeds.

The federal shutdown, now three weeks old, remains unresolved as the US Senate again failed to pass a resolution to reopen the government. The deadlock persists, with Republicans and Democrats divided over funding resolutions and health care cost concerns.

Key Takeaways:

  • Judge has blocked Trump's administration from laying off federal workers during shutdown.
  • Unions argue the layoffs are unjustified during a funding lapse.
  • The shutdown continues as Senate fails to pass a resolution.

Once again, some nutty activist judge overruling the democratically elected leader of the United States.

If they had their way Trump would have to ask them permission to go to the bathroom.

Perhaps we should just stop the charade and let unelected judges run the country?

The claim made by Miller that the President holds Plenary Authority is not a laughing matter.

Or do as Bukele and get rid of activist judges.

A distict court judge. How can this be a hate comment. Surely it's pointing out once again that an activist judge is trying to determine federal actions at the behest of the Democrats. The answer to all this is simple. Democrats accept the clean CR which they have previously accepted, open government and then negotiate.

Judge Susan Illston laid the smackdown on the Justice Department and the evildoers pair of the wicked wannabe King and his court jester. The dressing down well served.

“The hatchet is falling on the heads of employees all across the nation, and you’re not even prepared to address whether that’s legal,” Illston told a Justice Department lawyer during the hearing. She said public comments by Trump and White House Budget Director Russell Vought, including references to targeting “Democrat agencies,” suggested “explicit political motivations” behind the cuts.

Sam............?  🤒

Forget political parties soon in order for the president to use a bathroom he is going to need a supreme court ruling.

Like him or not these court cases are only making the US weaker.

Remember anything the Dem judges can do the gop judges can do when it's reversed.

Sort of agree. "Protecting democracy" these days has less to do with enacting policies voted for by the majority and more about "protecting bureaucratic proceduralism."

Anytime a judge stands up to Trump it's a celebratory day for the entire planet, mankind has been moved forward once again.

Yes, I am labelled a leftist as well, I don't even live in the banana republic

Great job.  Our enemies are laughing and preparing.  Distracting ourselves with infighting and wasting time is only going to put us farther behind in the AI race.

Sometimes in history you only have one chance to get things right.  I believe this is one of those times.

This will get thrown out in the Supreme Court just like the very same partisan judge's ruling against Trump was last time. This is an activist judge working for the Democrats.

From OCT 15 order:

What is becoming clear is that reductions in force (“RIFs”) during a government shutdown
are not “ordinary” RIFs in any sense of the word. Based on the record before the Court, some
employees do not even know if they are being laid off because the RIF notices were sent to
government e-mail accounts, and furloughed employees may not access their work e-mail during a shutdown.

Will you say the same thing when right leaning judge do the same thing next time a  DIM president is elected

The challenge in all governments is bloat and this is becoming worse with time.  Unlike RL workers government employees and teachers think they are owed the jobs can teach crap or sit in office or at home doing nothing.

This wastes money and stalls education and high work standards.
