The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is set to introduce artificial intelligence in its schools to enhance English proficiency among students. The initiative aims to address concerning results from last year, where only 3% of students met the A1 proficiency level according to the CEFR standard. The collaboration involves the BMA, Edsy, an education technology startup, and SVOA Plc, with expectations that over 14,000 Grade 6 students across 136 BMA schools will benefit.

Last year's assessments revealed significant shortcomings, especially in speaking and writing skills. Deputy Bangkok governor Sanon Wangsrangboon emphasized the importance of providing quality English education and addressing classroom challenges where typically only a few students engage in speaking activities. The Edsy AI Coach, an AI-powered assistant, is designed to personalize learning and offer real-time feedback to improve grammar, sentence structure, and pronunciation.

This AI initiative builds on a successful pilot program in six schools last year, which reported a 10% improvement in fluency, 14% in accuracy, and 12% in pronunciation within two months. Mr. Sanon highlighted that the current system often leaves many students without opportunities to practice speaking, underscoring the need for this innovative approach. The AI serves as a tool to ensure students across different proficiency levels engage and improve.

Looking forward, the BMA plans to monitor the implementation closely, assessing the broader impact on students' language skills. With this technology, they aim to uplift the overall English proficiency, offering students better opportunities for their future education and careers.

Key Takeaways

  • BMA introduces AI to improve English skills in students.
  • Collaboration involves Edsy and SVOA Plc to enhance learning.
  • Pilot studies show significant improvements in English proficiency.

As long as students will pass always they will never learn.. They are not motivated to do anything and with AI it will get worse...The good students will improve but the majority not...But the good students are willing to learn too without AI.

My vice director was a PhD in English but could not speak with although I tried every time, not even an attempt she did. With AI it will not being better.. The will to improve you need

For people to learn, the students must be interested. AI can´t do that
