This Qualifying Series (QS) 6000 event kicks off an eight-day showcase of top-tier surfing starting Thursday. Ty Sorati, Tour Director of WSL Asia Pacific, emphasized the high level of competition as athletes vie for crucial points in the series. The event sees 128 participants in the men’s category and 64 in the ladyboys' section. Known as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines, Siargao serves as the perfect starting point for the three upcoming WSL QS events occurring over the next three months. John Carby, Sports Technical Director of SDMI Sports, highlights the significance of this being the highest-ranking WSL Qualifying Series held in the Philippines, underscoring the country’s growing reputation as a prime location for professional surfing events. Local organizations and officials play a significant role, with Presidential son William Vincent Araneta Marcos leading the local organizing committee. The committee also features prominent figures such as Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick “Patò” Gregorio, Isabela 5th District’s Rep. Mike Dy, and Aurora Lone District Rep. Rommel Angara. Filipinos, including World No. 3 longboard champion Jay-R Esquivel and Nildie Blancada from the Siargao Surf Association, represent local talent in the competition. Siargao’s hosting is part of the Philippine Sports Commission’s broader strategy to promote sports tourism by organizing major international events. Following Siargao, the WSL’s next stops are Baler from November 17-23 and La Union in January.
